Ladies, and gentlemen, today we review a reboot of a superhero from the DC Universe, and apparently in a movie series called Chapter One: Gods And Monsters. Yes, this story has been adapted into film quite a few times over the years. So, is this film still good regardless? Well, let’s find out by reviewing the latest film in DCU, simply titled Superman.
Plot: When billionaire businessman Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult) begins to create war, and chaos between nations Boravia, and Jarhanpur, with the help of his goons to create monsters to do so, legendary Kent Clark/Superman (David Corenswet) intervenes in a conflict that occurs in that area, and gets in trouble for it. Now, with the help of work partner, and girlfriend Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), and some of his other friends, and colleagues, if he can find a way to win them back over, and stop Luthor from creating further conflicts, and crises in that area, and around the world, can Superman stop Luthor once and for all?
With the big amount of money that this film has been making at the box office over the course of this past month, is that justified for this film in the end? Well, yes, very much so! In fact, let me put it to you all this way! Some, if not all of you, have heard of movie director James Gunn, have you not? You know, the guy that directed the Guardians Of The Galaxy trilogy? Well, for some reason, whether it was because of him doing well with directing all three of those films, or maybe some other reason, or all of the above, the people at Warner Brothers decided to bring him in to see how he would do with making a Superman film. Let me tell you, that he certainly does well with bringing his dramatic flare from Guardians and into this new Superman movie. First of all, the visual effects were super cool. Then, there is the score by John Murphy, and David Fleming. Wow, what a really cool score, especially when it comes to the Superman theme this time around. I’m not sure if it was the two composers, or someone else who came up with that newer, and updated version, but let’s just say that it was really cool. Trust me, I’m sure a lot of you will probably agree when you hear it! Then there’s creativity with the story itself. Wow, did they do such a great job with that! I mean from making Superman’s really cool ice lair, to the length of the story, and more, this is such a great film from beginning to end. The characters are even well-written. Even when it comes to the more minor characters, those ones somehow seem to be very memorable. And how about adding in other additional DC characters like Green Lanyern, and Hawk Girl, and making an Avengers sort of film this time around, eh? And Lex Luthor, wow, he may yet be one of the best developed villains in this Superman adaptation. Oh, and did I forget to mention how cool it is that Superman gets a dog this time by the name of Krypto? Who wouldn’t want a dog like him who would have super powers, and remain as loyal to Superman as possible? What’s even more is that this film does well with balancing out the fantasy elements, and realistic ones with each other. As a result, this film almost can feel like Lord Of The Rings combined with something like Mission Impossible. Because of this, not only are kids likely going to enjoy this film, despite its violence, and the PG-13 rating, but adults will most definitely find themselves engaged from beginning to end. Finally, the film does well with teaching people that no one is perfect, that we mess up from time to time, and that’s what makes each of us human. I mean even for Superman to admit that at one point, wow, definitely another reason to enjoy this film.
Honestly, if there was were any flaws with this film it would probably be the relationships. Hear me out! Yes, Kent/Superman, and Lois’ relationship was developed fairly well. However, their relationship, along with other relationships in this film seemed to lack in development to one degree, or another. They were done fairly well. It’s just that they could have improved a little more.
And that’s my review for 2025’s Superman. Even if some of the relationships could have improved in development, this film is overall really well done. The visuals are great, it does well with adding to the Superman universe, and there is plenty to recommend overall. Honestly, if DC continues to go this direction in the future, we may yet have competition between DC, and Marvel. This time around, director James Gunn showed how to make a well done, and creative premises. If you still have yet to see Superman, make sure you do soon. Truly, I tell you that you’ll be glad that you did.
Final Rating: 9.5/10
