Good evening ladies & gentlemen! Tonight, we conclude reviewing Disney films, for the most part, as my time with Disney+ has come to an end, and I will be back in the groove with the 007 James Bond marathon here shortly! For the grand finale, we are going to be talking about another Disney+ exclusive that was released back when Disney+ first launched around mid-November of this past year, along with the Lady & The Tramp remake, and a few other exclusives after that. Starring Anna Kendrick, Bill Hander, Billy Eichner, and some other people, the name of the movie that we are reviewing tonight is Noelle.
Plot: After Kris Kringle (Jay Brazeau), who was 22nd in the line of descendants that was in the role of Santa Clause, has recently passed away, the Santa hat is passed on to his son, Nick Kringle (Bill Hader). This means that he is to officially become Santa Clause, by delivering gifts to children around the world. However, when Nick becomes overwhelmed by the responsibilities of the job, and his sister Noelle (Anna Kendrick) makes a joke about him taking a WEEKEND for vacation, he decides to instead run away from his responsibilities. Now, with the help of her childhood nanny, Elf Polly (Shirley MacLaine), can they get down to Arizona, where Nick is currently located, and talk sense into him before it gets to the big Christmas Day?
Well, what can I say? Noelle may not exactly quite be one of the best if the best kind of Christmas films like say A Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, or some of those Christmas films that may be considered timeless classics by many. In fact, in some ways, it’s a shame that this film ended up only being a Disney+ exclusive film. This is kind of hard, considering that the only people who may remember most of the good things about this film are the ones who have Disney+ as a subscription, while others would not be able to watch it otherwise. Are more and more people bound to buy Disney+ in time? Maybe, maybe not! While some people may want to watch everything Disney-related on there, there may be other people, myself included, who would prefer to still watch some of the older Disney films on Blu-Ray, or even on VHS, if we were to get lucky from time to time on the latter. Not like some of us couldn’t still watch other Disney content that we don’t own on Disney+, but still. But I digress more back into this review! I bring this up mostly because of the fact that Noelle is probably not going to be quite as well-known sometime down the road. That is at least not as much as some of the Christmas movies that got theatrical releases a long time ago. Still, even if that’s the case, there are plenty of pleasant elements that make this movie worthwhile. First off, the world building of the North Pole, it may not necessarily be the best if this film got a theatrical release. However, since this is a movie that would have most likely been under the Disney Channel Original Movie banner years ago, it is still very good. It’s cool how they even have their own court system in this movie. It’s also really creative how they set up characters like the reindeer, or even the choir singers that sing at random points throughout this film. Oh, and speaking of the choir singers, those characters most likely bring out the comedy more so than some of the other characters in Noelle. Some of the other characters are great too, such as Elf Polly, Mrs. Kringle, the court judge, and, best of all, the title character herself, Noelle. She is spunky, feisty, realistic, and knows how to be as joyful about Christmas, or even anything else in life. She is always good at making up her mind, and knowing what she wants out of life as well. Going back to the choir singers, the one other thing that I would like to mention in regards to those characters is that anytime that they substitute their own lyrics to classic Christmas songs, or even add lyrics to those songs, you can’t help but laugh at them, or with them. What a fun way to help make a newer Christmas film more enjoyable! The landscape of this movie is also breathtaking. Whether you are flying with the reindeer through the North Pole, seeing some of Utah, or even the beautiful city landscape of Arizona, how could you not help but want to be on those reindeer, and experience flying through, or into those places yourself? An additional thing to like about this film is that Noelle touches into some rather deep subjects, such as learning to see things from other people’s perspectives. This is particularly true about the whole thing about what may be happy, and joyful to one person may surprisingly be more depressing, and gloomy to another individual. Yeah, this film can really teach people to learn to see things from another person’s point of view, even when it may feel difficult to do just that. Finally, this film shows how even some kids may decide that they may not want things for themselves when it comes to asking for gifts for Christmas. In fact, there may be times when kids may want something for someone else for Christmas instead. Yeah, how could you not appreciate that this film portrays life like that in terms of kids, teens, or even adults being really selfless in that regard? More than that, how could you not like the additional message about how certain situations don’t always have to be structured a certain way? So many times, we seem to think that things in life have to be this way, or that way. More often than not, people will probably appreciate how certain aspects of this film will remind people that things in life don’t have to be set up a certain way, but can be designed to be more flexible. What a great reminder to all of us!
However, is this film perfect? Well, not quite! Here’s the thing! While a lot of the characters are great, along with some of the world building, and things like that, there are a few characters that may be a little too cliche. Okay, yes, we know that some characters may be cliched you one degree or another. However, when some characters seem to be that way, and not have that much personality to themselves, that can be somewhat of a downer, you know? As a result, some of these characters who end up being that way don’t end up being as likable, or as memorable for that matter. Going off of that, some of those characters that do stand out to an extent, could have maybe been a little more fleshed out if this film might have lasted a little longer. How much longer? Maybe 5-15 minutes! Still decisive on that! There’s also some of the music. Oh, it’s fun, and upbeat, sure. Still, you probably won’t find yourself enjoying some of these songs as much as you did in say The Santa Claude, or maybe even the Polar Express, or something Christmas movie like that, you know?
Well friends and family, that’s my review for the 2019 Disney+ film, Noelle. Sure, it may not be quite as popular among the general public. However, there are definitely plenty of positives to take away from this film. Is it more than likely that nearly everyone will have Disney+, and watch films like this, and others in the future! For now, I say that’s hard to say, as I’m sure that there are people who may be reserved about adding additional subscriptions, like this one, to their home. Not only that, but depending on if movie theaters are able to reopen in the next month, or two, there may be those out there who will probably be more drawn to the theater arena than completely converting to streaming only, you know? Well, even if Noelle may not be entirely memorable, it is filled with plenty of great things, including really good messages, having a new take on the Santa Clause story, and things like that. There is plenty to recommend to people who may want to see this film for themselves. Check it out, and see for yourselves!
