Ladies & gentlemen, today, we review one of the more recent G.I. Joe films that was just released not too long ago. It is the one, and only Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins.
Plot: A young orphaned boy named Snake Eyes (Max Archibald), a name that he gives himself after seeing his father roll a pair of dice that land on ones, decides to take on martial arts in order to avenge his father’s death. Years later, and now a young man (now played by Henry Golding), Snake Eyes gets recruited to go to Japan, in order to be further trained in the martial arts. With new friends that he makes along the way, will he still want to avenge his father’s death by tracking down those who killed him, or will he have a change of heart in the end?
So, was this a good film in the end? Well, the new film, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, does have some very good things to enjoy about it. For one, how could one not admire the martial arts action moments that occur throughout this film? Seriously! That is especially since there are some funny moments here and there when some of those scenes happen. Is it possible that some of those moments may last a little too long? Perhaps! Still, at least those scenes will help get your adrenaline going, you know? Next, there are the visuals. Oh man, especially when you see fire, or objects such as “Jewel Of The Sun,” or things like those, they are very cool to look at. Sure, they may not be as grand as say those of something like Avatar, or Prince Of Persia, or movies like those, but they’re still very good to look at. And of course, need I mention the acting in this film? Oh, and the CGI is also really cool too, especially when there are creatures such as snakes involved. Wow, isn’t it impressive how far technology has come to make really cool CGI creatures? Films like Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins are no exceptions. Additionally, there were some really cool concepts, and ideas that were handled in very creative, and maybe even unique ways. One could possibly go so far as to say that the execution of some of those ideas were genius. Oh, and finally, it was nice to not have certain cliches in the film.
However, there were also some areas that seemed to keep this movie from being a really great film. First off, even for a running time of two hours, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins is most likely a little too fast paced for the most part. Because of this, there are other problems that result, such as a lack of character development. This seems to partially be because the film may be crowded with way too many characters. Either that, or maybe some of the characters seem to show up a little too late in the film, and are not given their due as a result. Also, minus Snake Eyes, and a female character named Akiko, the characters don’t seem to stand out, and be memorable. Some of them were okay, but they could have been better. Even the villains were just mediocre. As for the writing overall, it was just okay. Not bad, not good, but at least okay to above average. As for the world building, it could have most definitely been elaborated on more than it seemed to be in the end.
And that’s my review for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The film does have good concepts, really good action, and some very creative ideas in it. The film did overall have some good potential. But either because of running time issues, or some other problems, this movie doesn’t seem to quite reach the full potential that it most likely could have in the end. I would say to see it if you go at a time when tickets are cheaper, or sometime like that. There are good things to enjoy about the movie. Still, don’t except a classic action masterpiece like Avatar, or something else.
Final Grade: C+
