Well, everyone, after this review, we will be ten reviews from my 750th review. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m most definitely excited for that being the case. Well, for today, let’s talk about my 740th one on this blog. It is the latest Smurfs in the Smurfs film franchise, simply titled Smurfs.
Plot: When one of the Smurfs in the mythical Smurfs village gets abducted by the evil sorcerer, Razamel (JP Karliak), it is up to some of the Smurfs, led by Papa Smurf (John Goodman) to go rescue him, and bring him back once and for all.
Honestly, if I were to make a personal preference, I would probably travel to space with Elio, or likely even be on further adventures with the former Bad Guys (though I still have yet to see that sequel to officially make that verdict) than magically transport to the real world in this latest Smurfs movie. Okay, don’t get me wrong, in some ways, it was nice to see the little blue guys back in theaters. However, in such a fairly short time, around 10-15 years to be exact, it would seem that we’ve probably seen them a little too much, and that studios are probably making these particular films for a potential cash grab, to try to make kids aware of the Smurfs’ existence, or some other reason. Don’t get me wrong, there are still some good things about this latest Smurfs film. For one, the animation was really nice. Also, it was nice to have a couple original songs in this new film, including one from Smurfette herself. Oh, and, as I mentioned in the plot portion of this review, we have another villain in addition to Gargamel. This time around, Gargamel has a brother named Razamel. So that’s a nice twist that we get two new villains this time, especially since, in the world of the Smurf shows, or films, it’s almost always just been Gargamel for the villain, you know? It was also good to have other additional characters added this time around. Oh, and did I forget that there were additional worlds this time around as well? Sure, those could have been a little better developed. But hey, at least it came to show that the writers were trying to put effort into creativity. And last, but not least, as far as positives go, at least there were still some rather hilarious moments as well.
Still, in spite of all this, there doesn’t seem to be anything else special in this new addition to this particular franchise. Some of the Smurfs also seem underdeveloped. And plus, why have live-action backgrounds, and/or live-action, when the main heroes, and villains are all animated? Just a thought there! And, finally, the story itself doesn’t seem to be anything special.
And that’s my review for Smurfs. Though nothing special, it still has some fun, and redeeming qualities, like newer characters, some comedic moments, nice animation, and things like that. Still, I would say see this film if you have a special monthly movie pass, or something like that!
Final Rating: 7.5/10
