Alright everyone, today, we are going to talk about the latest entry in the Marvel Studios/Disney library. Starring Kit Harrington, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and a few others, the movie is Eternals.
Plot: First set in 5000 BC, a group of immortal beings called Eternals are assigned to destroy Deviants, a group of evil creatures that are hellbent on destroying the world. Though they initially destroy the last of them in 1521 AD, the Deviants are brought back to life, ready to wreak havoc once again in present day London, England. With Ikaris, and Sersi (played by Richard Madden, and Gemma Chan respectively) as leaders of the Eternals, will this group of immortal beings succeed in ridding the world, and universe of these monsters once and for all?
Friends, I hate to be the bearer of bad news! Eternals may yet be one of the weakest, possibly even worst of this group of superhero films, especially when it comes to ones being released in recent years. Yes, the musical score is good. The film may also be filled with very good action. And yes, the special effects, the visuals, as well as the very few comedic scenes may be good too.
Overall, however, Eternals doesn’t seem to be worth one’s time as much as other recent Marvel films before it. First off, when the immortals are living normal lives for a period of time, what the heck is with one of the immortals being a gay guy, and having a gay relationship with another man? Seriously, if the Eternals are supposed to be good immortal creatures that fight for good, and justice in the world, a gay element has NO business in the world of the immortal characters. It’s one thing for mortal human characters to be gay, or lesbian. But it’s totally another to make an immortal character in a fictional story/world gay, or lesbian, wouldn’t you say? Additionally, putting things like that aside, the story seems to feel very confusing, as well as convoluted. I mean, despite the story being a little over two and a half hours long, either because this film crammed too many characters in, or tried too hard to expand on the story, or something like that, the story fails to be as good as the other Marvel movies on nearly every level. Speaking of characters, the characters also don’t seem to be developed all that well. Yeah, certain plot twists that involved some of the characters were nice on the surface. However, one can’t necessarily say that those plot twists worked well, especially since there wasn’t much buildup in that regard. And not to mention that some of those characters seem to be all that likable. Some of them are, yes, but a few of them aren’t, you know? As for the ending, there were certain aspects of it that felt rather puzzling, and confusing.
And that’s my review for the new Marvel/Disney film, Eternals. Yeah, besides giving movies like 2019’s Captain Marvel not as good of a review a long while back, I’m not normally one to give movies like Eternals a negative review. However, the filmmakers gave people like me, and I’m sure others, a reason to do so this time. It’s a shame, because movies like this seemed to have so much potential, despite it’s really long running time. I would say save your money for Spider-Man: No Way Home next month, or some film like that. Yes, Eternals may be part of the Marvel canon. Still, it’s far from one of their best works. Again, oh well! Well, let’s hope that if this film gets enough negative reviews from others, it won’t be as popular, and the filmmakers will learn a valuable lesson from making movies like this one.
Final Grade: D+
